The eChlorial Team

eChlorial is an ultra specialized store in micro-algae

We are a small family business founded in 2002 by Muriel Cathaud, Doctor of Science, specialist in chlorella. After obtaining a doctorate in physics and chemistry from the University of Lyon I, Muriel worked for many years in the medical research sector. At the same time she continued to exchange with Professor Karl Steinberg, a renowned scientist and long-time friend. It is Professor Steinberg who made her discover the properties of chlorella. It is from this friendship that eChlorial was born and started to make chlorella known in France and abroad.

Today, next to our Organic Chlorella grown in glass tubes, you will find on the store different micro-algae with exceptional qualities. In order to keep a real expertise and to advise our consumers in the best way, eChlorial has chosen to specialize only in microalgae: chlorella, spirulina, astaxanthin (heamatococcus microalga extract). On our store you will only find products that we know and whose quality and traceability we have verified.

Our main priority is Quality! We personally consume the products we sell every day. Great Chefs use our products in their kitchens for their impeccable quality. While 99% of the world’s microalgae production comes from China, Mongolia or India, our products are grown in Europe.

eChlorial is the only certified organic store specialized in microalgae that offers products exclusively grown in Europe and in perfectly controlled conditions to ensure maximum quality, regular monitoring and a minimum carbon footprint.

We have a very rigorous Quality Charter: eChlorial’s chlorella, spirulina and astaxanthin are grown in a perfectly protected environment, free from any external pollution. Our micro-algae are all produced in Europe, in a controlled environment, by our rigorously selected producers. The production is rigorously monitored according to the European standards in force. Each batch is analyzed in microbiology. The absence of heavy metals and traces of residues are regularly controlled by independent laboratories. eChlorial has been the French expert in chlorella and micro-algae for nearly 20 years.

Astaxanthin : The King of Antioxydants

Astaxanthin belongs to the family of carotenoids, which includes more than 600 molecules, the best known of which are: beta carotene, lycopene and lutein.

Carotenoids are pigments whose colour can vary from red, orange to yellow. They are commonly present in living beings. They are synthesized by all plants because they play a role in photosynthesis. Salmon, lobster, shrimp, or flamingo have pretty orange colours because they eat algae that contain carotenoids! (1)

Astaxanthin has been consumed as a dietary supplement since the 1990s.

This natural red pigment is extracted from haematococcus pluvialis, a freshwater micro-algae. It can also be produced by chemical synthesis.

Today, astaxanthin is still little known, but this powerful carotenoid is starting to make a name for itself as more scientific and clinical studies are being published mentioning its incredible properties.

The benefits of astaxanthin on our health can be explained by the fact that it is a very powerful antioxidant. (1)

Benefits of astaxanthin

In recent years, the results of some 300 scientific studies and about 40 clinical studies have been published, which attest to the interest of astaxanthin.

Its antioxidant power could be 800 times more powerful than coenzyme Q10 and 6000 times more powerful than vitamin C!

Its powerful antioxidant properties improve our health and slow down the effects of aging on :

Brain : cognition, brain aging and degeneration

- Improvement of cognitive functions for the elderly (memory, mental agility, etc.)
- Help for Alzheimer’s patients
- Slowing down the effects of aging due to oxidative stress

Eyes : vision, AMD

- Protection of visual functions
- Improvement in symptoms related to age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

Heart : cardiovascular system

- Reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation
- Regulation of blood lipid profile
- Improvement of the micro circulation of the blood

Muscles : muscular capacity (endurance and recovery)

- Improves endurance and muscle recovery
- Fights free radicals produced as a result of exercise
- Prevention of muscle fatigue by reducing lactic acid production

Skin : reduction of hyper-pigmentation responsible in particular for aging spots

- Improvement in the quality of collagen, thus improving the elasticity of the skin and its dryness, which is responsible for wrinkles. (2)

According to the scientists authors of the publications, consuming astaxanthin would have a major impact on the aging process of our cells, visible in particular on the quality of our skin.

Moreover, astaxanthin would allow a prevention against cognitive decline related to age or disease.

Astaxanthin also has benefits on endurance and muscular recovery. Physical activity produces free radicals whose harmful effects are reduced by the action of the powerful antioxidant astaxanthin. It thus appears to be a particularly valuable supplement for all athletes and people exercising regularly.

Natural Astaxanthin, Organic Astaxanthin, Vegan?

Published studies have been made with natural astaxanthin, extracted from micro-algae.

Today there is not yet any certified organic astaxanthin, the specifications of organic culture applying to micro algae is relatively new, so it is difficult to find finished products entirely “Organic”.

Astaxanthin is generally eaten in softgels, most of which contain animal gelatin based on fish or beef. There are only a few brands that offer 100% natural vegan astaxanthin.

It is important to pay attention to the quality of the production of the original micro-algae. They must be pure, without heavy metals or other pollutants linked to the production environment. It is therefore recommended to choose Natural Astaxanthin extracted from microalgae grown in a closed, perfectly controlled environment, such as in glass tubes.

No undesirable side effects linked to regular consumption of astaxanthin have been reported to date.

The recommended consumption of astaxanthin by official bodies varies from 2 to 12 mg per day, depending on several factors such as age, health, activity, etc. The daily dose commonly used as a food supplement is 4 to 8 mg. (3)

NASA is studying astaxanthin…

Like spirulina, the properties of astaxanthin are such that NASA wants to use this exceptional antioxidant to supplement the diet of astronauts. Among other things, astaxanthin could fight against radiation exposure, as well as the negative effects of the absence of gravity on the eyes, the cardiovascular system and the reduction of bone mass. The 6 Lies on Spirulina: Dangers, Organic Spirulina, Pregnancy…

➤ The 6 lies to know absolutely about spirulina algae: dangers, organic spirulina, thyroid, pregnancy…

• Lie #1 : Spirulina represents a danger for your health

→ Presence of toxins and salmonella in spirulina!

Toxins, such as microcystins and salmonella are dangerous to the liver, and have sometimes been found in some spirulina samples from Asia imported into Europe. Be vigilant and favour serious producers and close productions. To find out for sure, do not hesitate to ask your spirulina brand directly.

→ Spirulina quality

The 6 Lies about Spirulina

The 6 Lies about Spirulina

Spirulina is considered by official health authorities to be a food. Its properties are such that it can be offered for sale as a food supplement according to European regulations.

It therefore does not represent a health risk any more than any other food such as salad, cheese, meat… It is essential to consume an organic spirulina of great quality! If it is grown under controlled conditions and its bacteriological analysis are in conformity there is no reason why it should be a danger to your health. It is strongly recommended to check the origin of the production. This must be clearly indicated.

→ Thyroid and iodine

People with thyroid problems regularly wonder if spirulina contains iodine: this is not the case, spirulina does not contain iodine. Only seaweed contains it, but spirulina is not an algae and is not grown with seawater, except in some rare cultures.

• Lie #2 : Spirulina is not recommended during pregnancy

Spirulina is an excellent food supplement that pregnant women can consume if the quality of it is impeccable. For all foods that expectant mothers consume on a daily basis, it is important to be even more vigilant about the quality and origin of the products!

• Lie #3 : Spirulina is an algae

Spirulina is commonly referred as blue-green algae and is considered a microalgae because it grows in water. In fact, it’s a cyanobacteria! This appellation is obviously of little importance, only its health properties are really important.

• Lie #4 : Spirulina cures cancer

If spirulina cured cancer, it would be wonderful and it would surely have been known for a very long time! Spirulina alone obviously cannot cure cancer. However, it has proven anti-tumor properties, such as chlorella. Like the latter, spirulina can be used in cancer prevention and in support of anti-cancer treatments such as chemotherapy.

• Lie #5 : Spirulina contains vitamin B12

Even if spirulina is a super food full of valuable nutrients for your health, on average only 20% of the cobalamin contained in spirulina is bio-available. The remaining 80% represents what researchers call “pseudo-vitamin B12″. This pseudo vitamin will mobilize physiological targets but it will not be “usable” by our body. Moreover, the pseudo vitamin B12 which will monopolize the physiological sites will compete with the real vitamin B12 present, to the detriment of the latter which is essential to us. This is why it is advisable to take the combination of chlorella and spirulina with a time interval of at least a few hours. Chlorella grown in glass tubes under natural sunlight contains vitamin B12.

• Lie #6 : Organic spirulina is grown in your country

On the Internet and especially on Amazon you will find many brands that abuse of the brand “organic spirulina” and play on the notion of the certification “Made in USA/Canada/etc”. This approach is deliberately intended to mislead the consumer. Indeed, there are very few organic spirulina producers in the west, 99% of “Organic spirulinas” come from Asia (Mongolia, China, India). The designation “Made in …..” simply indicates that the spirulina tablets were made in your country, from a powder of unspecified origin. The product needs to clearly states : spirulina grown in “…” and not “made in”.

The 7 Lies about Chlorella : dangers, organic, properties…

The seven lies and dangers to know absolutely about chlorella! Properties, hazards, production methods, benefits, etc.

• Lie #1 : Chlorella’s cell wall must be “broken” to be digested, otherwise it is ineffective

This is undoubtedly the most widespread lie about chlorella. It is mainly found on US sites (with the term “broken cell wall”). Selling the properties of chlorella, these sites explain that chlorella’s cells must be pulverized in order to be properly digested!

This is absolutely false, this flaw has been turned into a selling argument by the vast majority of chlorella producers using open ponds, which are completely unprotected productions from the external environment. These producers must imperatively lower the bacterial level of the culture, which can be dangerous for health and especially for the liver if chlorella is mixed with toxins. Unable to use the heat that would remove fragile and valuable nutrients, they use mechanical high-pressure cleaning techniques. This process is very effective in reducing the level of microorganisms, but it undoubtedly mistreats chlorella cells. The content of the chlorella in open cells is then exposed to air and loses quality. The claims of these sites are not based on any scientific value or study.

There is only one study on this subject. It shows that the digestibility rate of chlorella is similar for “broken” cells and whole cells (about 80%). It is important to choose chlorella with intact cells capable of preserving the integrity of their precious contents.

• Lie #2 : Do the “Organic Chlorella” “AB”, “Ecocert”… certifications issued by European organisations guarantee a European production?

The answer is No! the organic label or a European certification issued by a European body, such as AB, Ecocert… can be obtained even if the production is located outside Europe!

Organic chlorella, in the sense of the “organic” label regulated by European regulations, only exists since 2017.

Microalgae (chlorella, spirulina…) have recently been concerned by the definition of organic production rules defined to take into account their specificities. A specification for organic microalgae in Europe has just come into force (2017). Organic microalgae in accordance with European regulations are very new on the market. However, their production is more expensive because it requires the reprocessing of organic fertilizers before use.

For some years now, we have been able to see so-called “Organic” chlorella or spirulina on the market because of the commercial interest generated by this appellation. They come from China, the United States or more recently Germany. They claim different certifications that are not related to each other or to European regulations. Most often this is an abuse of the European organic label.

Why is the “Organic” term is such a sensitive subject for micro-algae?

For reasons intrinsic to aquatic culture. Indeed, the “Organic” certification requires the use of inputs of organic origin, thus involving the use of organic fertilizers. However, in an aqueous micro-medium very favorable to the development of microorganisms, those introduced with organic fertilizers will proliferate. This bacterial abundance makes the control of the microalgae culture medium very delicate. The organic fertilizer will feed the environment but it may also pollute it. There is a solution that consists in treating the organic fertilizer before its introduction into the environment. This additional operation is costly and remains delicate.

This is why the European “Organic” certification for microalgae has been specially defined in a specific specification for this type of crop and has been slow to be implemented.

Organic culture is a great approach, but it must not be done at the expense of product quality and even less in a purely commercial logic. eChlorial has always chosen to focus on product quality!

Since 2019 eChlorial has been offering organic chlorella and organic spirulina grown and packaged in Europe!

• Lie #3 : Chlorella is a danger during pregnancy

Like all products that can be consumed by pregnant women, we must be extremely careful when it comes to quality and origin. Chlorella can be very beneficial to pregnant women as long as it is of impeccable quality, like all the other products they consume on a daily basis. A study showed that a consumption of 6 grams of Chlorella per day during pregnancy reduced the concentration of dioxins in breast milk by about 30%.

• Lie #4 : Chlorella is full of heavy metals

Is chlorella a heavy metal magnet (mercury, lead, cadmium…)? Yes, and that is one of the main reasons why it is famous! However, there is no reason why it should be saturated with heavy metals if its culture medium is strictly controlled, such as glass tube culture. Heavy metals are natural elements found all over our planet, in the water we drink and the food we eat. They are difficult to eliminate, so they accumulate over time. Their presence can be a problem when their quantity becomes too important. This is why it is beneficial to detoxify regularly and preferably with natural products.

• Lie #5 : All chlorella is naturally rich in vitamin B12

Chlorella cultivated in fermenters are cultivated in an almost-sterile environment that does not allow the production of vitamin B12. Since 2014, chlorella grown in fermentors has been available on the market. Synthetic vitamin B12 can be added to the final product, the chlorella sold will be “rich in B12″ but not “naturally rich in B12″.

Chlorella eChlorial, grown in glass tubes using natural sunlight, is naturally rich in vitamin B12!

• Lie #6 : Chlorella cures everything: cancer, liver, detox…

Chlorella has many benefits! It is considered a food whose micronutrients composition is such that the health authorities have accepted that it is marketed as a food supplement. Chlorella has many health benefits : it cleanses the body and enriches it with valuable essential nutrients, and we all know that a clean and well oiled and well fed engine works well and for a longer time.

It will be able to solve problems if they are related to heavy metal poisoning or physiological weakness or deficiency. It can also reduce pain thanks to its anti-inflammatory action, but it will not cure the problem that causes it. Thus the reduction in the pain of osteoarthritis is significant but stopping the consumption of chlorella will not maintain its effects.

• Lie #7 : The country origin of chlorella

The origin or the “lie by omission”! 99% of the chlorella available online, organic stores and pharmacies come from Asia. Most of these brands are careful not to disclose the origin of their chlorella, which is bought at a very low price and grown under conditions that are difficult to verify. Only a few brands have the transparency to share the origin of their product, most do not mention any origin. Beware of the words “Made in …” which simply means that the product has been packaged on the territory, but not necessarily grown in your country.

Differences between Chlorella and Spirulina

La Spiruline est une cyanobacterie

Spirulina is a cyanobacteria

Chlorella and Spirulina are two famous supplements that more and more people are using as they become more aware of the healthy properties of these algae.

Spirulina is a cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) and consequently belongs to the “true bacteria“ category. Chlorella, on the other hand, is a eukaryotic “true“ plant.

This clearly shows that the name “algae” is a collective term for various organisms living under water, but whose origins are truly different.

Organisms living under water and that need sunlight to live are usually classified as “algae”. Both man and Chlorella are classified as Eukaryotes. Reduced to phylogenetic relationships, it means that man is more closely related to Chlorella than Chlorella is to Spirulina.

Spirulina is a blue-green coil shaped cyanobacteria that can be found in either fresh or salt water. Spirulina lives in oceans throughout the world. Chlorella is a spherical green true alga that requires only carbon dioxide, water, sunlight and small amounts of minerals for reproduction.

Chlorella has been determined to contain about 45% protein, 20% fat, 20% carbohydrates, 5% fiber, and 10% minerals and vitamins (including the vitamin B12 which is generally only found in meat). Chlorella contains 20 amino acids including the 8 necessary for human diet.

Spirulina contains between 55% and 77% protein, but is considered to be a total protein. It includes all of the 8 amino acids that are necessary as well as 14 other less-essential amino acids.

La Chlorella est une micro algue

Chlorella is a genus micro algae, with high levels of B12

Chlorella is probably the most studied plant in the world as it has been used for over 100 years as a model organism in botanical research. Its effects on the animal and human organism have been the subject of scientific studies for around 80 years.

The effect of Spirulina, which in some culture groups has been a regular feature of the menu for many hundreds of years, has been similarly well researched. Their high protein and unsaturated fatty acid content, as well as a variety of vitamins and minerals, make Chlorella and Spirulina valuable supplements to the human diet. Moreover, recent scientific studies indicate that various constituents of these algae have pronounced immune-modulatory properties which make them interesting for applications in the medical field.
