Astaxanthin : Dosage, Benefits and Contraindications

These recommendations are given for informational purpose only, for healthy adults.

At the end of 2017 a new microalgae, Haematococcus pluvialis, and its extract, astaxanthin, were authorized for human consumption by the European Commission.

Astaxanthin, extract from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, has been included in the list of novel foods or food supplements[1] defined by the European Commission on Novel Foods, in accordance with the novel food regulation (EU) 2015/2283.

Astaxanthin: definition, origin, explanation

Astaxanthin is a member of the carotenoid family of more than 600 molecules, the most famous of which are beta carotene, lycopene and lutein. Carotenoids are pigments whose colour can vary from red, orange to yellow. They are commonly found in living things. They are synthesized by all plants because they play a major role in photosynthesis, a reaction that uses carbon dioxide and light to produce organic compounds and oxygen.

Salmon, lobster, shrimp, or flamingo have pretty orange colors because they eat algae that contain carotenoids!

Astaxanthin is a bright red pigment. It is naturally produced by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. The natural food supplement Astaxanthin is therefore an extract of this microalgae. It can also be produced by chemical synthesis. It is this much cheaper synthetic product that is used to feed farmed salmon or trout to give their flesh a pretty orange colour.

Astaxanthin has particularly interesting effects on our body. Scientists explain its benefits on our health by the fact that it is a powerful antioxidant!

Dosage and benefits of astaxanthin

8 mg astaxanthin per day is recommended, equivalent to a consumption of 1.6 kg of fresh salmon. Astaxanthin is consumed per cure of 2 to 3 months.

In the European Commission’s text, mention is made of an authorisation for a recommended intake of up to 80 mg of Haematococcus pluvialis oleoresin, or 8 mg astaxanthin per day.

Clinical studies conducted in Japan show that a daily consumption of 4 mg of astaxanthin provides significant protection of the skin against the effects of UV rays and that a consumption of 6 mg per day shows an improvement in skin elasticity, wrinkles, dry skin, age spots, eyes.

Major athletes use minimum doses of 16 mg per day.

Among the scientific publications reporting the efficacy of astaxanthin, some have been conducted with high doses: from 40 mg to 100 mg per day. A dose of 40 mg per day has been shown to be effective in improving gastric reflux syndrome, particularly in people infected with Helicobacter piloris[2].

The maximum amount of astaxanthin present in the blood appears between 8 and 10 hours after a 40 mg dose.

When to take astaxanthin during the day?

Astaxanthin should be taken with or immediately after a meal. Indeed, studies show that its assimilation is optimized in the presence of lipids (*).

(*) pharmacokinetic research has been conducted using 40 mg[3] or 100 mg of asta per day[4]. They specify that the best absorption of astaxanthin is in the presence of lipids. It is therefore recommended to consume it during or just after a meal[5].

Side effects and dangers of astaxanthin?

No negative side effects or dangers have been reported to date for regular doses of up to 40 mg per day.

Contraindication to astaxanthin?

No contraindications to astaxanthin have been identified to date.

However, as a precautionary principle, astaxanthin is not recommended for pregnant and lactating women.

Possibility of association with astaxanthin?

Depending on its needs, astaxanthin can be taken in combination with chlorella and spirulina.

For the search for anti-inflammatory effects (painkillers), the combination of chlorella and astaxanthin is judicious.

Reminder: it is recommended to take chlorella in the morning on an empty stomach, spirulina in the evening before the meal. Astaxanthin is best taken during or after a meal because it is best assimilated in the presence of lipids.

Chlorella Usage Recommendations and Contraindications

Chlorella is not a drug, and it is not included in the pharmacopoeia of Western medicine. However, there is an abundance of scientific articles and publications that describe chlorella’s effects. Pharmaceutical labs are even working to extract the active components of chlorella to enrich their own medicines.

80% of new consumers of chlorella notice its positive effects within a month, so there is no doubt that chlorella can be beneficial to your health.

Chlorella is a powerful heavy metals and PCBs magnet, it is therefore very important to select a high quality chlorella that has not been in contact with pollutants, such as a chlorella grown in glass tubes.

Dosages and usage recommendations : how to take chlorella ?

Chlorella can benefit nearly anyone, but there is no universal recipe for its use. We are all complex beings with many commonalities, but we are also individuals with our own unique characteristics and backgrounds. Factors such as absorption rates, disposal capabilities, physiological reactions, and levels of pollutants in the body are all specific to each individual.

These usage recommendations serve only to guide your first doses of chlorella. They provide information about average doses and treatments and should therefore be read for informational purposes only. It is important to make adjustments and find the dose that is right for you, according to your own unique needs. Moreover, do not forget that our needs can change over time, depending on the season, stress levels, fatigue, or other varying factors.

Some people choose to take chlorella for 3-4 months twice a year while others prefer to take their supplements year-round. Similarly, some people take 10 chlorella tablets (300mg) a day while others take 30 tablets. It is up to each individual to adjust the dosage to his or her own needs.

Please note that no case of an overdose of chlorella has ever been reported.

To find the right dosage for you, pay close attention to your body’s reactions and how you feel overall.

Ultra pure organic chlorella eChlorial cultivated in glass tubes

Consumer experiences have shown that a daily dose of 2-5 grams of chlorella (or 10-15 300 mg chlorella tablets) has significant positive effects on quality of life. Doctors and nutritionists also suggest taking 3-5 grams or 10-15 tablets every day to prevent health complications and illnesses.

Recommended dosage for children

Powdered chlorella (or crushed chlorella tablets) can be given to children. Doses should be adjusted to the weight of the child in proportion to the recommendations for adults. For example, a child weighing 20 kg should take around 1 gram of chlorella or 3 crushed chlorella tablets.

When to take chlorella ?

Take chlorella at least one hour before or after taking any other medications (such as birth control pills). Ideally, take chlorella in the morning and other pills at night.

If it is more convenient, chlorella can be taken in two or three doses throughout the day rather than all at once.

Take chlorella before meals and with a large glass of water.

Because chlorella is rich in bioabsorpable iron, do not drink tea with chlorella. Tea can inhibit the absorption of iron.

In addition to taking chlorella tablets, using chlorella powder in cooking is very important, particularly when eating fish, which invariably contains a variety of toxins. Add 1-3 teaspoons of chlorella powder at a low temperature (60 degrees Celsius or below) or at the end of cooking in order to preserve its vitamins.

Recommendations for first use

It is best to begin by taking 1-2 chlorella tablets per day. Progressively increase the dose until reaching the desired dosage.

The average recommended dose of 10-15 tablets per day can be reached in 10 days.

Do I need to take chlorella year-round?

Chlorella can be taken every day, year-round. Alternatively, it can be taken in treatments of 3-4 months. These treatments should occur twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn.

Contraindications to chlorella

Those affected by hemochromatosis (an excess of iron) should not take chlorella because the supplement contains bioabsorbable iron.

If you are taking anticoagulants, consult your doctor before taking chlorella. Because chlorella contains vitamin K, which plays a role in coagulation, the supplement may affect anticoagulation treatment.

Side effects of chlorella

Possible intestinal disruption during the first days of use

Chlorella can stimulate intestinal activity immediately. Therefore, slight disturbances in intestinal behavior, including bloating, can occur during the first days of taking chlorella. These effects do not last.

The majority of new consumers notice an increase in intestinal activity without experiencing any significant discomfort. But if intestinal activity increases too much or too quickly, decrease the daily dose of chlorella or, if necessary, stop taking chlorella for several days.

Although few people experience a slowing down of intestinal activity, if this is the case, quickly increase dosage (30-60 tablets or more) and drink more liquids, preferably water. Normal functioning will return in approximately 10 days.

Side effets : Headaches, Vomiting, Joint pain, Dizziness…

Although they are rare, other side effects can occur after the first dose of chlorella. These may be due to the beginning of the detoxification process, which stirs up heavy metals that have accumulated in the body.

Side effects affect around 10% of people taking chlorella and vary in nature and intensity, depending on the level and type of pollutants in the body.

Some of the most common side effects include: headaches, sinus infections, joint pain, numbness, depressed mood, dizziness, and shaking.

To remedy negative side effects, increase dosage in order to accelerate the rate at which chlorella eliminates toxins and leaves the body. Take up to 15-30 tablets four times a day until side effects subside (8-10 days). Slowly reduce dosage amount and frequency until reaching a normal daily dose.

In some cases, consumers that are sensitive to caffeine have also experienced restlessness when taking chlorella with coffee. To avoid this side effect, it is best not to take chlorella with caffeine or at night.

Treating recurring problems with Chlorella: cold sores, mouth ulcers, constipation…

Constipation

Chlorella can treat both chronic and occasional constipation. Its effects on intestinal activity are immediate and guaranteed – all you have to do is find the right dosage!

At the beginning of a Chlorella treatment for constipation, it may be necessary to take large doses (30-60 Chlorella tablets a day, maybe more). Once the intestine is functioning regularly, reduce the dose to around 10 tablets per day. This process could take several days or several weeks.

To help treat constipation, it is also important to drink plenty of water.

Labial herpes (cold sores) and mouth ulcers (canker sores)

By strengthening the body’s natural defenses, Chlorella helps prevent and eliminate outbreaks caused by dormant viruses. Painful and embarrassing cold sores, for example, usually appear suddenly and with little provocation, but they can be avoided by taking Chlorella.

Chlorella’s beneficial effects on the quality and resistance of membranes are noticeable by the end of a three-month treatment.

Allergies

The anti-inflammatory power of Chlorella explains its ability to help reduce the effects of allergies.

Some people report that they no longer suffer from seasonal allergies as they did before taking Chlorella. In some cases, consumers have even stopped taking other allergy medications altogether. Thanks to Chlorella, they feel much more resistant to allergens and no longer need other treatments.

Transient depression

Chlorella often brings about a pleasant feeling of overall wellbeing that is difficult to describe.

This feeling of wellbeing, increased morale, or even euphoria can be explained by the high concentration of tryptophan in Chlorella (0.1-0.4 g/100g dried Chlorella).

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that acts as a precursor to both serotonin, which is also known as the “happiness hormone,” and melatonin, which promotes good sleeping habits. Because of these effects, tryptophan can improve moods and lead to a better night’s sleep, which further helps fight the blues.

Because tryptophan is an essential amino acid, our bodies do not produce it naturally. It therefore must be obtained through the food we eat or through supplements such as Chlorella.

Dr Klinghardt’s natural detoxification program with Chlorella

Program for the detoxification of heavy metals according to Dr. Klinghardt

For the detoxification of heavy metals, Dr. Klinghardt recommends the use of chlorella along with Allium ursinum (also known as bear’s garlic) and Coriandrum.

This program (P1 and P2) lasts 3-4 months altogether and requires 1.2-1.5 kg of chlorella, according to the given average doses. A preventative treatment lasts 3 months and requires 350 grams of chlorella.

P1 – Program for people preparing for the extraction of dental amalgams (silver fillings)

Membrane detox chlorelle

Chlorella possesses a hyper affinity with certain heavy metals and pesticides

Before beginning a detoxification treatment, be sure to consult your dentist to verify whether it is necessary to extract your amalgams, especially if they are recent.

Begin taking extra pure chlorella vulgaris as early as possible before extraction of the amalgams to test your reaction to the supplement and adjust the dosage as needed.

In the days preceding the extraction, start by taking 10 small chlorella tablets of 0,3g (OR 6 mid-sized tablets of 0,5g) per day. Progressively increase the dosage to reach 20 small chlorella tablets of 0,3g (OR 12 mid-sized tablets of 0,5g) the day before the extraction. Tablets should be taken in the morning upon waking up, between breakfast and lunch, between lunch and dinner, and at night before going to bed.

The day of the extraction, take 20 small chlorella tablets of 0,3g (OR 12 mid-sized tablets of 0,5g) four times: in the morning upon waking up, before the procedure, after the procedure, and at night before going to bed.

After the extraction, follow the P2 detoxification program.

P2 – Program for people without dental amalgams who tolerate chlorella well

Proprietes Chlorella Detox Energie Anti tumorales

Chlorella has detox, energetic and anti-cancer properties

Phase 1: Intensive treatment of about 6 weeks

During the first week, take 20-25 small chlorella tablets of 0,3g (OR 12 to 15 mid-sized tablets of 0,5g) four times a day: in the morning upon waking up, between breakfast and lunch, between lunch and dinner, and at night before going to bed.

Starting the second week of treatment, take 20-25 small chlorella tablets of 0,3g (OR 12 to 15 mid-sized tablets of 0,5g) four times a day, as during the first week. Additionally, take 1-5 (or up to 10) drops of a mother tincture containing Allium ursinum 1-3 times a day before meals. This dose should be adjusted slowly according to your reactions to it.

Once the Allium ursinum is tolerated well, begin to take 1-5 drops of Coriandrum in a mother tincture 1-3 times a day at the end of meals. This dose should also be adjusted gradually according to your reactions.

Note that the mother tincture can be replaced by powder, which is less concentrated.

Phase 2: Treatment of at least 2 months

After completing Phase 1, take 10-15 small chlorella tablets of 0,3g (OR 6 to 10 mid-sized tablets of 0,5g) per day in 2-3 doses before meals. Continue to take the doses of Allium ursinum and Coriandrum as well.

It is recommended to maintain this program year-round.

A quote from Dr. Klinghardt:

“Pay attention. There are all kinds of chlorella on the market. This algae…must be cultivated ‘in tunnels,’ away from pollution. If it is not, you get algae that is already full of [heavy] metals and is therefore minimally effective.” (From an article by Michel Dogna of Journal Soignez vous, N°26, « Mort lente par les métaux lourds »)

Chlorella for Pregnant Women and Nursing Mothers

Chlorella contains a growth factor (CGF) that facilitates the production and regeneration of the body’s tissues, making it a valuable supplement for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Additionally, Chlorella acts as a powerful detoxifying agent, it is therefore very important to select a high quality chlorella that has not been in contact with pollutants, such as a chlorella grown in glass tubes.

Chemical pollutants in the environment such as dioxins and PCBs accumulate in our bodies over time and can eventually cause a variety of health complications. These same pollutants cross the placental barrier and appear in breast milk in high concentrations. Chlorella can help a mother rid her body of these toxins, improving both her own health and the health of her child.

Pregnant and breast-feeding women should maintain a balanced diet that is rich in fiber and chlorophyll as well as a healthy lifestyle. Adding Chlorella to your daily health routine as soon as possible during your pregnancy is highly recommended.

Chlorella also contains potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and selenium, all of which are indispensible to cell metabolism. Whether making up for a dietary deficiency or supplying additional nutrients, these minerals improve the production and strength of tissues, bones, teeth, nails, and hair. They are therefore important nutrients for a woman who is pregnant or nursing.

Scientific Proof

Studies have been conducted in Japan* to identify effective methods of reducing the accumulation of dioxins and PCBs in the body, particularly in pregnant women and nursing mothers. Among the many methods tested, the introduction of products rich in fiber and chlorophyll into a person’s diet proved to be effective.

One study showed that a daily dose of 6 grams of Chlorella during pregnancy can reduce the concentration of dioxins in breast milk by around 30%. Additionally, a significant increase in the concentration of immunoglobin A (IgA) in the breast milk was found. Chlorella can therefore have a doubly beneficial effect for women who are pregnant and then begin breastfeeding: it will reduce their children’s exposure to dioxins as well as help protect them from infections.

Chlorella for treating illnesses

Chlorella is excellent for treating illnesses

Chlorella is recommended for anyone with health problems that diminish physical strength or mental wellbeing. It is a natural supplement that acts on the immune system of an ill person to deliver powerful effects.

Thanks to previous studies of cells in mice, we have known for several years that Chlorella can have positive effects on the immune systems of animals. But in a more recent study completed at the University of Seoul in South Korea, Jung Hyun Kwak (2012) and his team of researchers measured the effects of Chlorella on the human immune system.

This double-blind study compared a placebo group to a group of healthy adults who took 5 grams of Chlorella tablets daily for eight weeks. Results indicated that the patients who took Chlorella showed a significant increase in the number of cells involved with the immune system, such as NK lymphocytes, interferon-gamma, interleukin-12, interleukin-1 beta, and TH1 lymphocytes.

This study thus demonstrated that Chlorella can effectively stimulate activity in the immune system.

Chlorella as an antivirus, antibacterial, and antitumor

Due to its ability to stimulate the body’s natural defenses, Chlorella can help combat viruses, bacteria, and tumors.

Research* has shown that Chlorella may also be able to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy without interfering with the effects of the treatment.

Nutrients and beneficial properties of Chlorella

Chlorella is effective in treating illnesses because it is rich in nutrients and contains essential elements such as vitamins and minerals. Its antioxidants offer many benefits, too, thanks to their analgesic and healing properties.

Furthermore, fatty acids and antioxidants work together to give Chlorella hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic properties. Because of these properties, Chlorella can act as a natural supplement to treatments that fight hypertension and cholesterol.

In fact, a daily dose of Chlorella can be used to support medical treatments and help improve the body’s reactions to them.

For instance, Chlorella can help minimize the often-inevitable side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, including mucositis (oral lesions). In addition to reducing side effects, Chlorella can promote a quicker recovery from these treatments by assisting in the production of blood cells.

Other ways Chlorella can help treat illnesses include diminishing the symptoms of gastric problems and alleviating skin problems such as psoriasis and eczema.

Studies have even revealed the possibility of using microalgae to fight type 2 diabetes.
